The Ikarus 280 is a Hungarian articulated high-floor city bus from the post-war period. It was first presented to the public in 1972, and its serial production started a year later and lasted until 2002. The bus was powered by various engines from companies such as MAN, ranging from 193 to 310 HP. The curb weight of the bus reached 12.5 tons with a total weight of 22.5 tons. In its basic version, it provided 29 seats with a total number of 145 seats.
The Ikarus 280 turned out to be a great design success and was widely exported by the Hungarian manufacturer. Sometimes it is described - a bit exaggerated - as the most popular city bus in the world. The multitude of recipients also led to the creation of a large number of versions of the basic model. Poland was also one of the countries in which Ikarus 280 was operated. He first entered the roads of the Polish city (Katowice to be exact) in 1974. Numerous versions of this bus were operated in Poland, including: 280.11 (model with a changed drive unit), 280.26 (model with a driver's cabin and larger roof hatches), 280.46 (version with an automatic transmission Praga 2M70) or 280.53 (version dedicated to suburban connections with revised gearbox and drive axle). In 2017, several Ikarus 280s were still in the stock of municipal carriers in our country.
