The Bristol Pegasus was a British aviation engine from the interwar period and World War II produced by the Bristol Engine Company. It was designed by Sir Roy Fedden. It was first tested in flight in 1932. The engine - in the Pegasus XVIII version - weighed 504 kilograms with a displacement of 28.7 liters. It is estimated that approximately 32,000 units of this aircraft engine were produced.

The Bristol Pegasus was a single-star 9-cylinder radial engine that was developed from Bristol's other Mercury and Jupiter engines. The Bristol Pegasus was the same size as the Jupiter engine, was also made of steel and aluminum, but had a much more elaborate mechanical design, which resulted in the new engine having a great power-to-weight ratio. Bristol Pegasus was constantly improved and in subsequent versions it achieved higher and higher maximum powers, for example: Pegasus II had 635 HP, Pegasus III already 690 HP, and Pegasus XXII - 1010 HP. The latter uses a completely new turbocharger. The engine was used as a power unit for many British aircraft of the Second World War. It powered such planes as, for example, early versions of the Vickers Wellington, Fairey Swordfish and Short Sunderland. It was also used in Polish aviation as an engine for PZL P.23 Kara¶ and PZL P.37 £o¶ machines.
